Originally developed 20 years ago on the NES, A Boy and His Blob tells the tale of a young boy destined to overthrow an evil usurper who has wrongfully claimed the throne of Blobolonia.
He can't do it alone, and must rely on his buddy, Blobert who exhibits incredible superhero-like powers when fed different flavored jellybeans. The game was award-winning in its day and is a natural as a remake for the Wii.
Being remade by Majesco and developer, Wayforward Technologies, A Boy and His Blob is still a side-scrolling platformer with all the charm of the original game but with way better graphics. The hand-drawn look of the game will likely remind gamers of the simple beauty of Xbox Live title, “Braid”.
To overthrow the emperor, the young hero navigates through 40 levels on 4 different worlds, solving puzzles with the help of his faithful blob. To be successful, the two have to work cooperatively which means keeping the blob happy and well...full of beans.
To activate the blob's special abilities and transform him into helpful tools—like ladders, parachutes, cannons and shields—he needs to be fed jellybeans. Jellybeans aren't infinite though and different flavors affect the form the blob takes.
It's important to remember that feeding the blob is isn't enough to keep him happy; he also needs love. So if the blob turns red and refuses to obey, that means it's time to stop what you're doing and give him a hug.
Whether you play A Boy and His Blob for the first time on the Wii or play it to relive fond memories, your experience is bound to be a good one.
If the E3 demo is any indication, the game is shaping up to be a ton of fun and is also looking like one of the most beautiful games to be released in 2009.A Boy and His Blob comes out in October of this year, exclusively for the Wii.
