OK, it's not literally sweat shop work, but according to many QA veterans, game testing often bears more than a passing resemblance to it. That said, in possibly one of the most ridiculous reality show ideas ever, the Playstation Network announced auditions this week for a new program entitled “The Tester”.
The series will have aspiring game testers duking it out reality-style for the privilege of working for Playstation’s San Diego QA department.
Supposedly, contestants will face challenges wherein they’ll prove their “mental toughness, endurance and video game knowledge”. As the official site has it:
“This original program will challenge a select group of gamers in a series of tests to determine if they have what it takes to make it as an official Game Tester. Contestants must have the whole package to take home the coveted prize in this new original series. That's because the lucky winner will earn a contract position at Sony Computer Entertainment's Quality Assurance department in San Diego, CA, where he or she will get hands on time with the most highly anticipated games in the industry.
You must be at least 21 years of age and legally eligible to work in and a current resident of the United States for consideration.”
Things must be rough in Playstation's QA department if they're having to get this creative in their recruitment tactics. Ah well. One man's toil is another man's treasure. So if you love video games and you're into the idea of working 60-80 hour weeks for a few cents over minimum wage, good news--your ship has come in!
