Game culture infiltrates the fine art world via the Laguna Art Museum

It feels like it’s been a long time coming but at long last, the highbrow art world is starting to recognize the amazing work being done by today’s most talented video game artists.

The Laguna Art Museum’s new exhibit, “WoW: Emergent Media Phenomenon” shows some of the most spectacular examples of video game art from arguably the world’s biggest gaming phenomenon, World of Warcraft.

Curated by by Grace Kook-Anderson with assistance from Blizzard's curator Tim Campbell and artist Eddo Stern, the show aims to examine the impact online gaming has on society as well as ways in which artistic practices have been influenced by game culture. Attendees will enjoy work by fourteen hand-picked artists—among them Blizzard artists Chris Metzen and Sam Didier (a.k.a., Samwise)—as well as fan art and machinima.

Jane McGonigal, a game designer and researcher, states, "This is a new generation of hard-core gamers, and what they're doing is generating unprecedented participation bandwidth. They are donating more cognitive cycles, more heart share to game worlds and virtual worlds than we've seen dedicated to any project before."

That's highbrow talk for "this show is cool!" The exhibit runs from June 14 through October 4, 2009.
