Our fine friends at Kotaku have blistering news from the game development world, where they report Spore's maker Maxis of Emeryville, CA. may be getting hit with large layoffs as their parent company Electronic Arts trims 17 percent of staff.
We first heard of the ... layoffs a week ago. ... Affected heavily are Spore and former-Sims studio EA Maxis, .... Those development studios are said to be hit with substantial layoffs, according to a source, with remaining employees relocated to EA headquarters in Los Angeles and Redwood Shores.
SFCGE knows Spore didn't sell as well as some people wanted, and it came in years behind schedule. And Kotaku reports that an internal EA memo said the layoffs were to "improve our cost structure, ensure quality and build schedule integrity for this studio."
That's corporate-newspeak for, 'Your games cost too much to make, didn't make enough money, plus they sucked and were late. Happy Thanksgiving! XOXO!'
