Adam Lambert and the sexual double standard

37th Annual American Music Awards (AP Photo/Matt Sayles)

ABC announced today that Adam Lambert will no longer be performing Wednesday on Good Morning America, citing concern over his sexually charged performance Sunday night at the American Music Awards. While ABC thought his guy-on-guy kiss, crotch grabbing, and simulated oral sex were too much for middle America, the producers at CBS The Morning Show and David Letterman clearly disagreed. They swooped in securing his performance on Wednesday for both of those shows.

Lambert offered no apologies this morning on Ryan Seacrest’s show stating, “I’m not a babysitter, I’m a performer.”

While ABC is certainly within their right to chose performers as they see fit, it does smack of a double standard. Lambert’s performance was no more sexually provocative than any number of other on air kisses, most notably Madonna’s mini ménage à trois with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2003. All three ladies have continued to appear and perform on the morning shows. Angelina Jolie’s kiss with her brother at the Academy Awards raised many eyebrows, but that just heightened interest in all things Angelina. In addition, Mick Jagger, the late Michael Jackson, and legions of male pop and rock stars have made the on-stage-crotch-grab very mainstream. It is hard to imagine a scenario where the Rolling Stones would be disinvited from performing on a morning show.

If straight male rock stars can grab their crotch on stage and women can simulate a threesome, why can’t Lambert be as free with his sexual self-expression?

What do you think of ABC’s decision? Will you watch Adam Lambert on The Morning Show or David Letterman?

I THINK the people that called ABC to complain will be the ones tuning in to CBS to watch ADAM! They know they loved it! ADAM rocks!

As I always say: don't like it? Don't watch, but don't try to censor things for others because of your tastes.

Adam Lambert is phenomenal! It is a double standard, and I am looking forward to seeing Adam on CBS and Letterman. I feel bad for the folks who flew/drove to NYC specifically for his performance. By the way, his new album is fantastic!

All I have to say is times have really changed and I would prefer if none of that type of sexual behavior on tv be shown. I don't think young children need to see that. I remember "I love Lucy" when a married couple slept in twin beds. That shows how much times have changed in the last 40 years. I am scared for the future generations.

Adam Lambert degraded no one but himself at the AMA's. Adam lowering himself to that performance did hurt him. Talent vs. Taste. However,I believe it was a one time thing with him. A bright future awaits him.

I hope Adam performs at the Academy Awards. He has so much to offer. Flaunting sexuality is unnecessary. His performance with Queen was awesome. I hope he repeats it with Queen on a CD.
