Much to the lament of overbearing mothers everywhere, today most Americans will spend half of their adult lives unmarried. The average age of first marriage continues to increase for both males and females, and 41 percent of American adults 18 and over are currently single. The growing economic influence of singles as a demographic means that cities can’t afford to lose them.
And what U.S. cities stand the best chance of attracting this crucial group? Forbes examined data from 40 of the largest urbanized areas in the country and rated them on culture, nightlife, job growth, the cost of living single, online dating, and the ratio of other singles. Providence, R.I., for example, is at the bottom of the list because it came in last in the online dating category. But it also scored low in several other categories, coming 35th in job growth.
