When I think of how traveling can help or damage a relationship, I usually think it is because one partner is away from the other for two long (or not long enough!), however I never thought of the other obvious aspect. I really never considered that traveling together could cause a potential problem in the relationship until I met Wanda Mann, The Black Dress Traveler at the “Savor the Success” event in NYC.
Wanda told me that not only can one person traveling a lot affect a relationship, but it can also really be affected by when the couple travels together. What, I asked, did she really mean by this? She told me that when a couple travels together they really find out who they are dating. Much to my surprise this sounded a lot like when a couple moves in with each other for the first time and truly realize whom they are sharing their space with.
I thought about how amazingly true all this was. When a couple travels together they are sharing the entire experience with one another, which can either be a good or a bad thing. Wanda gave me a very insightful example. If one person in the couple really is adventurous and likes to try exotic foods when they travel and the other person prefers staying close to the hotel and eating at McDonald’s, then there may be a problem. This sure does hold a lot of truth.
This is not to say that every time you travel with your partner that things are going to map out the rest of your relationship. However, it could really help the both of your decide if things could work out in the future. If the both of you are fun and carefree, you will probably really see that and appreciate it even more when you travel together because you will want to do a lot of the same things.
Wanda really got me thinking about how travel can really make or break a relationship and I really enjoyed her insight. If you want to learn more about Wanda Mann and The Black Dress Traveler, please check out her website at www.BlackDressTraveler.com.
