Denver's Lauren Wolf is a wife, mother and sex-toy entrepreneur. She offers a very thoughtful and sensual line of products that speak to today's sexually aware woman. We had a chance to chat with Lauren about her business and how she got involved. Here is the final part in our three part interview:
You have a wonderfully large section dedicated to “Moms” on your site. Why did you create this section and why do you think it’s so important?
Well, we had the wherewithal to enjoy ourselves while making the babies and then how easy it is to forget that! Kids are very consuming of our time and energy. We love them so much! Sometimes we love them to the detriment of the relationship that started it all. Making time, finding privacy and getting in the mood is difficult when all you crave is a shower and an undisturbed cup of coffee. We do so much for them and in the process forget ourselves. The best thing you can do for your kids is to have a strong and happy relationship with your partner. Happy parents have happy kids.
You also have an extensive section of ‘sensual guides” and we couldn’t help but peruse through all of great the sub-sections. There are two sections we think are singular and important, the “Over Fifty” section and the “Motherhood and Pregnancy” section. What inspired you to include these sub-categories?
I know as our parent’s age it is hard to think of them being intimate and having sensual needs, but we all do. Sensuality is an important part of every person’s life. I hope to continue my own sensual journey throughout my life and someday I will be the retiree having to reconcile aging and sex. There are a lot of physical changes that deeply affect our ability to have and enjoy sex and it’s something no one wants to talk about, but it’s there. Menopause, erectile dysfunction, lack of natural moisture, decreased pelvic muscle tone, etc.
Pregnancy is another physically overwhelming and all consuming process that many women experience. It is not easy and there are often ways that pregnancy affects a woman’s intimate abilities and desires. Hormones, emotions, awkward belly, high desire, no desire, uterine prolapse, and incontinence are all common issues, again, that no one talks about openly. Even doctors are unsure how all these things are affected with physical changes and what to do about them. Information is key and realizing you’re not alone and that with focus and patience it can get better and even be great again!
Which of the books in the “Over Fifty” category would you recommend most? (Okay, this is really question from one of our moms, but it’s still a good one.)
“Over the Hill and Between the Sheets” is a compilation of essays. I find the personal stories enlightening and heartwarming. It is a very humanizing collection covering a range of topics from erectile dysfunction, second marriages to long-term relationships. It’s funny and very insightful. Every person facing the golden years should read this book.
Likewise, if a pregnant woman could only buy one book, which from the “Motherhood and Pregnancy” would you recommend?
“Great Sex for Moms” by Dr. Raskin is a solid and funny guide for women facing motherhood. She covers with humor and delicacy libido issues, relationships, romance, balance and communication. She has a long history of dealing with and helping women in all phases of womanhood.
You mentioned that you work with therapists and marriage councilors. Can you tell us a little bit about this?
I am in the process of becoming a member of AASECT, American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists. I have several therapists and marriage counselors I use as a reference when I need information or guidance. I find having a professional arsenal is very helpful as someone who encounters many people often with sexual issues. I receive referrals from therapists and counselors; on occasion a therapist may find that a sensual product is therapeutic for a person or a couple. I also provide them with products to use as educational aids. Dr’s can request a product catalog or pamphlet for their office by emailing me at lwolf@signaturesensuality.com
As a woman and owner of Signature Sensuality, what would you say are the three most important ingredients to a healthy sex life?
1) A healthy self-image and an intimate knowledge about your body and all your sexual organs. Only you know what makes you tick, explore and have fun! 2) A great partner you love and trust and can talk to about anything, especially sexual in nature. What would you do, or never do or someday possibly consider? What is your fantasy? How does it play out? What role does your partner play? What are you attracted to in your partner? These are great topics that can bring you closer to understanding your partner’s sexual being and your own. 3) Keeping perspective, there is no such thing as “normal”. Everybody is different and every relationship has a different threshold for intimacy. From how often you like to have sex to what turns you on, understanding your partner’s needs and your own is crucial. There are ups and downs, highs and lows. Don’t hold yourself or your partner to any scale. Sensuality cannot be measured.
Any exciting plans for the future?
My mind is always churning out ideas and events. I am always looking for new products and doing lots of product testing J. Finding venues appropriate for adult products is difficult at times. I am always happy to meet with moms groups, women gatherings, natural product suppliers, fellow businesswomen and earth friendly events. Currently, I am sponsoring several events for Earth Day.
University of Chicago Earth Week and Pride Week
I will also be at the Oysters and Chocolate Book Signing on May 16th at the b-side lounge in Boulder. People can come meet me, see some of my products and chat about sex.
