Pattern pick of the week

This week’s pattern pick is the Oliver & S School Days Jacket & Coat pattern.

Why it works: Contemporary yet classic, this pattern offers so many options that you’ll have a hard time choosing which to make first. The coat is lined and there’s also a pattern for a removable insulated lining. Made without sleeves, it’s a splendid cool-weather vest.

Why you’ll love it: First of all, you will love dealing with this company. The pattern is a delight to receive – the quality of the paper, illustrations and packaging is superb. The instruction sheets are clear, thorough and include lots of options and helpful hints. Artist Dan Andreasen’s illustrations are as charming as ever. This multi-sized pattern is suitable for both girls and boys, so you’ll get lots of mileage out of it.

Some fabrics to consider: Winter-weight wool coating is an obvious choice. This pattern is also suitable for “coated” fabrics such as laminated cottons and oilcloth. Kids’ clothes are a great place to use fun and funky lining fabrics. Pre-quilted fabrics are available for the lining, but quilting your own can offer you a bigger variety of prints and patterns. Denim and duck are great fall-into-early-winter choices.

Other options: The suggestion is made on the Oliver & S blog for re-purposing an unworn winter coat and using the fabric to craft this pattern. What a great and green way to sew! Patterns are available on the Oliver & S website and at select stores

Designer Liesl Gibson and company have outdone themselves again with this sweet and wholesome pattern. It's brand new and will be available Septmeber 8. Visit their blog for lots of creative inspiration.

Oh this little pattern makes me wish all my kids and grands were small again. I made several little coats and jackets back in the day.

I know nothing about sewing, but this is really cute. Can people actually make these clothes? How amazing!

    Cheers and best of luck,
