I think this was a first for Project Runway. Men comparing their weight. Men. Comparing. Their weight. Then there is Anthony Stack Pack "I'm sweating like a Baptist preacher" Williams. I only wish he was as funny as he thinks he is. Okay, so he's pretty darn funny most of the time. Funnier still was a post on Lifetimes's twitter feed by stan2000RT: "Anthony needs a cocktail and a church fan". Yes, I can see that. And Janean is crying. Oh please...... No. More. Crying.
Certainly Tim looks so much more relaxed than he did in L.A. In fact, the show itself seems rather bouyant. The energy of New York is flying around, and it promises a great season. There is talent to show!
So, we all know that if we don't see to much of a designer in the early episodes, (s)he's safe. They can't give screen time to all of the designers early on, so they give it to those who will be leaving soon. The others have time to be seen. Frankly, I can't wait until we lose a few designers so I can get more than a 6 second look at their work. There are only so many times I can still-step my Tivo. I wanted to see more of the runway looks. As it is, there were only a few that warrented a comment.
Seth Anderson's Appalachian picnic dress was fun, in a Betsey Johnson sort of way. I even liked the big red zipper down the back. The hem tucks were interesting, but looked like they needed a bit more definition on the TV screen.
Jesus Estrada's looked hookerish. It's odd, because his past work does not really say "hooker" to me. That add-on train was a mistake. The lines had promise, but what designer adds on so obviously? Close call for him this time out. I can't say that I have much hope for him.
As I feared, Ben Chmura's Judy Jetson dress looked painfully in need of a better fit. The neckline was a mess, and was so NOT a good first impression to make. I wonder what's up with him?
Jay Nicolas Sario 's look was wonderfully fun, quirky and shouted out his point of view with flair, and skill. It could have been added into his previous work portfolio seamlessly
Pamela Ptak's design looked dated. I swear I made a dress just like that in the 70's. It was cute, the color was fun, but I worry for her.
Emilio Sosa, our winner, who Tim had time concerns about, ended up pulling his little party dress look together very well. It was adorable.
Jesse Lenoir's take on a suit was supposed to be avant guard with it's peek-a-boo shirt. Sadly, it was just came off as drab until the jacket came off. Sadder, I did not see the great amount of detail in it that he spoke of.
Oh Ping Wu. You are walking with the likes of Issey Miyake in the land of Asian design esthetics. Let's hope the judges get you. Your look was a lot of fun, though I am not sure what it was...pants, skirt? Whatever it was, it was a lot of fun. Ping should really spice up the runway as long as our judges understand the esthetic.
Christaine King's look was, well, a lot like Qristyl's blue dress from last season. It was a mish mosh of a thing that had potential to be great, but fell short. This was why she was aufed. She has some great red carpet looks in her portfolio. I am not sure what happened here.
I was worried about Amy Sorabi's fabric choice. It looked like an organdy jester in the workroom, but on the runway, it found it's voice as a great little bouncy skirt. I still want to know, however, WHAT was going on with the right boob?
Crying girl, or is it really wears-her-on-sleeve-girl Janeane, managed to out-do Mitchell Hall in the "Holy crap! quick-gotta-get-a-look-on-the-runway" front. Janeane Marie Ceccanti has an angel on her shoulder. Lets see if she makes good use of it.
Mila Hermanovski , our Louise Black soul sister, put together a simple look with a masterful use of fabric and pattern. Her skills at finishing were very evident. This should carry her far into the competition.
Now for the surprise. Nicole Ritchie was a fine judge. She looked terrible, but her comments and her way of speaking to the designers actually warmed my heart. If we can get past the crying, and if we can manage not to say "edgy" we should be in for the best Project Runway season yet.
