In the world of online services there are several dealing with death. One that celebrates a persons life and another that protects it. Let's start with the celebration - on line memorial websites. What, you ask is a memorial website? It's a beautiful and lasting way to honor a lost loved one. Personalized with eulogies, condolences, candles, photos, music and more, these websites are a permanent way to share memories with family and friends from anywhere in the world.
Features often include: the deceased's biography, tributes & condolences, photo albums, audio & video clips -candles and a family tree.
One such website is SympathyTree.com . Founded by Louise Zweben and her husband Monte, Sympathy Tree is an on line memorial website where you can share the story of your loved one and invite family, friends and colleagues to share their stories through words, photos and videos. You can share an also inform people of impending funeral and memorial events.
Originally from Scotland, Louise first had the idea for SympathyTree.com from her personal experiences in dealing with the death of a close family friend when she could not attend the funeral. Since then, Louise’s vision for SympathyTree.com is to become a site where people come to celebrate the lives of those they have recently lost and share their stories of love and loss, sadness and joy, and in the process, provide comfort to each other during this difficult time.
Another type of on line service that deals with death is Legacy Locker, founded by Jeremy Toeman. Recently profiled in CNN.com, Mr. Toeman describes the hassle that ensued trying to gain access to his grandmother's email account - not having the password. He finally gave up. This experience started him thinking about his own "on line mortality" and what he needed to do to prevent his wife from going through the same unpleasant experience. Knowing that he had multiple email addresses, websites, on line banking accounts, all having passwords, he developed Legacy Locker as a safe & secure repository for on line personal information. It offers protection to your heirs for your digital legacy.
One thing is for certain, their is virtual life after death.

Great article Pat. There are so many new wonderful resources out there.
For folks interested in these services, I would recommend MyEstateManager.com as well.
We just recently launched this as a free resource for families that have lost a loved one so folks can get through the whole process easier. Similar to what Service Magic does for homeowners and The Knot does for brides.
Check it out. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
It is good to know that in the Virtual World, there is "Life after Death" indeed. Thanks for these helpful leads.
This is a great article. I haven't tried Sympathy Tree yet, but have used www.YourTribute.com to memorialize a few loved ones. It is so nice to have a permanent online memorial to visit again and again.
