"If you haven't ended the fight in 3 seconds, you're doing something wrong." These are the words of Sifu Lamar M. Davis, II, head instructor at Kung Fu Mind and Body Fitness in Leeds. While some martial arts seek to keep alive ancient traditions, instill self esteem or prepare their students for combat sports such as the UFC, the martial arts taught at Kung Fu Mind and Body Fitness seek to teach students one thing: how to incapacitate a violent attacker in four moves or less. While taking out an uncooperative sociopath in three seconds may seem far fetched to some, when a martial artist of Sifu Davis' stature speaks, warrior athletes listen.
Sifu (Cantonese for master) Davis has been published in over one hundred martial arts magazines and is the author of the book Scientific Streetfighting. He has been inducted into three different Martial Arts Halls of Fame and taught seminars worldwide. He is the executive director of the Hardcore Jeet Kune Do Chinese Gung Fu Association (an instructor development organization), one of the directors of the Efficient Warrior Alliance and the co-founder of the Defense Fusion combat system. His upcoming website, Dragonblast will offer unique martial arts training gear; much of it made by Sifu Davis himself. He has been studying martial arts since 1967 with an emphasis on Bruce Lee's art of Jeet Kune Do. He is certified as an instructor by five of Lee's original students and is the founder of the Hardcore Jeet Kune Do approach to the art.
Hardcore Jeet Kune Do is a "reality based, real world self defense method" that does not endorse the "use of martial arts for sport, competition or recreation". Hardcore Jeet Kune Do is about self defense and nothing else. Hardcore JKD as taught in Leeds involves increasing levels of contact, extensive partner drills and realistic scenario training. There are no uniforms, no bare feet, no philosophy and no children allowed.
And hardcore means just that. HJKD utilizes techniques that would get any fighter disqualified from the roughest of MMA competitions. Unlike sport based martial arts, Sifu Davis encourages defenders to incapacitate their attackers with techniques aimed at the eyes, groin and throat as well as taking into consideration the dangers of weapons and multiple assailants. For these reasons, Hardcore Jeet Kune Do and Defense Fusion are excellent areas of study for individuals who are looking for effective self defense training without the traditional or sporting aspects often attached to modern martial arts.
