When Oprah Winfrey earned her Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree at the Howard University Ceremony in May of 2007, she thankfully addressed the graduates and urged them to "..follow your calling."
On Thursday February 4, 2010, almost 3 years later, Lori McCrindle, a 34 year old near 7 month pregnant occupational therapist from Toronto, answered that calling when she went into labour while at the Oprah Winfrey show in Harpo Studios Chicago.
When Oprah heard that an audience member was in labour, she rushed backstage and found Lori McCrindle already in the ambulance wearing an oxygen mask. Oprah then went on to help the labouring mom through a contraction.
Lori McCrindle was a bit upset that she couldn't sit through the show, but Oprah extended an open invitation to return: "..whenever you're ready, I'll fly you back, okay?" Sourced: The Canadian Press
One of the most frequent complaints in pregnant women that are in early pregnancy, is back pain from sitting. This may have been a factor for Lori McCrindle when her water broke at Harpo Studios where she was waiting to see the live filming of the Oprah show with her mom.
When a woman is sitting uncomfortably while pregnant, the expanded abdomen shifts the position of the spine and the hormones can relax the joints and muscles of the body whereby the overall affect can cause pressure on the back with pain.
The chiropractic science of sitting while pregnant:
- Sit with feet slightly elevated and sit straight with shoulders back.
- Keep the body in proper alignment and reduce pressure on the shoulders.
- Use a chair that offers good lumbar vertebrae support and avoid crossing the legs.
- Do not let your stomach pull forward on the lower back, it can cause great stress.
- Having a pillow is a good idea, place it between the knees to provide full support.
- Don't shift, constant shifting to find comfort while sitting stems from spine stenosis (tightening of the back) which may aggravate the pregnancy.
- If shifting frequently from discomfort, stand up and stretch often and take a walk when possible with low heel shoes.
- Make your doctor aware if you are uncomfortable while sitting; sometimes back pain is a sign of other issues that should be treated promptly.
Lori and husband Kyle had travelled from Toronto when they decided to spend two days in Chicago. The infant, little Justin Heath McCrindle (nicknamed Harpo) was "battered and bruised from the birth but is doing quite well" Lori McCrindle stated from Chicago's Rush University Medical Centre. "After all these years, it is not too often that we have a first at Harpo Studios but yesterday was a doozy!'' Oprah told her television show audience yesterday.
Little Justin Heath McCrindle, may have temporarily upstaged Oprah on her show, but when Howard University President, H. Patrick Swygert, had presented Oprah with the honorary Doctoral degree, he also declared her as a "citizen of the universe."
