Researchers at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center have been researching methods to bring cancer drugs into better effectiveness. This research has been promising so far. Dr. Doris Mangiaracina Benbrook, the principal investigator on the project has high hopes for the pill. So far the studies on the pill’s safety and effectiveness have not only shown the pill to be effective, but that there are no side effects to date. More research into the safety is expected to bring good results.
The compound the research team is using is SHetA2, a synthetic compound that targets abnormalities in cancer cell components and does not damage normal cells. This drug is what is called a flexible heteroarotinoid or flex-het. Flex-hets can change certain portions of a cell and affect cell growth. This compound is being researched for use with kidney and ovarian cancers.
Ovarian cancer is one of the most lethal varieties of cancer and traditionally shows a poor response to chemotherapy. If SHetA2 is effective to help treatment it would be a real boon in fighting this deadly disease. This treatment has been tested both in the test tube and in an animal model and has shown to be effective in both cases. All the remains are more clinical trials to take place which, in time may include testing in a human population. If these tests go well a new breakthrough in cancer treatment may have been found by this team at the University of Oklahoma.
