Nature centers helping grow next generation of scientists

Caves Valley Maryland
Caves Valley (Irvine Nature Center)

When I was a kid, I loved visiting my local nature center, which at the time happened to be the Clearwater Nature Center in Clinton, Md. I think the hours I spent examining the bones, pelts, stones, leaves, shells and other “please-touch” exhibits contributed to my love for animals, the environment and science in general.

And who knows, the next E.O. Wilson or Rachel Carson may be developing his or her love for natural science at your local nature center.

The Irvine Nature Center in Owings Mills, Md., offers some of the most fascinating hands on displays of natural science around. Originally situated on the grounds of St. Timothy’s School in Stevenson, the Irvine Nature Center recently re-located to more modern digs in a beautiful region of Baltimore County called Caves Valley. It serves as a sort of environmental education hub to local children and adults.

On Friday, March 27, from 6-8 p.m., the center will host a free  reception for its first annual Student Art Exhibition “All Things Wings.” Artistic interpretations of winged-creatures such as bats, insects and birds created by students in grades 6 through 12 from Baltimore County and Baltimore city schools will be featured and will remain on display until April 7 in the Fern Room of center’s new green building. Prizes will be awarded during the reception and the winning works will appear in the summer edition of the center’s newsletter.
