Northeast Winter Weather Preparedness Tips and Advice

             Northeast winter weather is coming again. Already there was a snow storm that took out power lines in some regions. Snow and ice can hamper transportation and cause accidents. Blizzard conditions wind ice and snow can isolate you in homes or leave you and your passengers stranded. When in these conditions there are some tools and advice that can help in cold winter environments. Winter environments leave drifts of snow and ice on roads and sidewalks. While in your home prepare for staying indoors till bad winter weather conditions stop. In your home you should have safe and adequate blankets and heating. Fuel burning stoves should be used safely and with plenty of space away from debris and drapes and furniture. There should be an adequate amount of fuel for winter weather that keeps you indoors for extended periods of bad weather. Keep fire extinguishers handy incase of accidents and teach everyone in the home how to properly use it. Be aware of individuals with certain needs that require medical supply’s (insulin for diabetes) for extended periods indoors. And have plenty of food and liquids to sustain indoors.

                Make sure your home is prepared for winter weather. Windows and doors can be covered in plastic over window seams and edges of the door. Pipes can freeze in the winter and burst, They can be insulated or shut off in cold weather. Snow drifts and ice accumulate on rooftops and can cause structural instability. Be sure that your homes roof is in good condition and have a way to clear snow in case of excessive weight from heavy and accumulated snow from past storms.

              When travelling be prepared for weather conditions. Make sure anti-freeze levels in your car are sufficient. The ignition system in your car should be in good working order with a good battery and secure clean connections and wires, make sure you have extra fuses if your vehicle uses them. Replace filters in your vehicle. Check oil and other fluid levels. Check your heaters, defrosters and wipers. Check lights and warning lights.

              Winter weather can leave you and passengers stranded. Have your tires checked for tread and consider installing winter tires from your mechanic. Maintain at least half a tank of gas in your vehicle. Inside your vehicle maintain some or all of these items in case of an emergency. A shovel, windshield scraper and small broom, flashlight, battery powered radio, extra batteries, water, snack food, matches extra hats, socks and mittens. First aid kit with pocket knife, necessary medications, blankets tow chain or rope, road salt and sand booster cables, emergency flares, fluorescent distress flag. Tire chains to improve traction can be installed to certain vehicles.
