Scientists discover new mammal facts

Scientists have discovered new facts about a mammal in the Caribbean. This mammal, the Hispaniolan solenodon, which is only found in Dominican Republic and Haiti, is an insect eater.

Researchers recently finally trapped one of these mammals and were able to take DNA samples and gather other information before releasing it back into its natural habitat.

It was discovered that the Hipaniolan solenodon has a venomous bite, though it is not clear if it is used for self-defense or for predatory purposes. What is true is that this mammal, along with its Cuban cousin, the Solenodon cubanus, is the only known living mammal capable of delivering venom through its teeth.

According to an article on redOrbit, a researcher for the Zoological Society of London, Dr. Sam Turvey, told BBC News

It is an amazing creature - it is one of the most evolutionary distinct mammals in the world.
