Still Thor from the weekend

From “Thorsday” at midnight to this Sunday, the Marvel Comics God of Thunder had a great weekend at the movies ($66 million).  And actually, so did those of us who went to see Goldilocks’ big screen debut.  Now that the hammer has fallen, this page will share a few thoughts maybe some of you had too:

Thor was a good movie on two levels:  the otherworldly 3-D realm of Asgard was a majestic sight.  It may not be as layered or complex as Middle Earth, but a movie completely set there wouldn’t have been awful.  But -- Thor was even more entertaining on Midgard, where his Fallen Thunder God routine played great with mere mortals.  It bodes well for his interaction with the heroes and villains in the upcoming Avengers movie.

Some of us finally learned how to pronounce “Mjolnir.”

Thor’s mother was a waste of space, and the movie wasted somebody as talented (and missed) as Rene Russo in the role.

The best parts of these Marvel Comics/Avengers movies are always the brief glimpses and hints about the next one.  Maybe we need to have better attention spans, but the anticipation for the actual Avengers movie continues to grow.  This movie’s cameo was a really good one:  those of us who get it are beside our fanboy-selves, but those who don’t get it won’t be lost because of it.  And how much geek fun is it to explain to the cool kids what it is they’re missing?
That said, while The Avengers will be the next time we see Thor, let’s hope it’s not the last.  While Chris Hemsworth proved he can carry a Thor movie on his own, his buddies were great and deserve to be seen again.  Lady Sif and The Warriors Three deserve to return.

So where does it rank among Marvel movies:  this list is fluid – opinions of Thor could change over time, and we’re coming up on X-Men: First Class and Captain America: The First Avenger.  But for now:

1. Spider-Man 2
2. X2
3. Spider-Man
4. Iron Man
5. Thor
6. X-Men
7. X-Men Origins:  Wolverine
8. Hulk  (yes, the first one)
9. Ghost Rider
10. Iron Man 2
