Being Human
BBC America is one of my absolute favorite channels for sci-fi series. The British have a wonderful knack for making sci-fi addictive. Take Doctor Who, for example. It's listed in Guinness World Records as the longest-running science fiction television show in the world (45 years and still going) and has become a significant part of British pop culture.
I was also totally hooked on Hex and was crushed when it went off the air. Another favorite is Ashes to Ashes. I could go on and on, but my point is the Brits do sci-fi right.
So I am excited to announce that BBC America has added three new sci-fi shows to their line-up, along with the new season of Primeval (another favorite of mine). Be sure to watch the promo trailers of each series. They say BBC One, but they are the same series as what will air on BBC America.
The first show is called Being Human. Newsarama.com describes Being Human as a “witty and extraordinary look into the lives of three twenty-somethings and their secret double-lives – as a werewolf, a vampire and a ghost. The trio do their best to live their lives as normally as possible, despite their strange and dark secrets. But with unwelcome intruders into their world, a threatened revolution from the vampire underworld and constant threats of exposure – on top of the day-to-day issues faced by young people – the only thing they may be able to rely on in their heightened world, is each other.”
Next is a series called Survivors. Newsarama.com says of this one - the chilling new apocalyptic drama, Survivors, focuses on the world in the aftermath of a virus that has wiped out 99% of the human race. The lonely few who remain struggle to start over in a devastated world where everything that was once safe and familiar is now strange and dangerous. At the center of the story is a bewildered but resilient group of survivors led by Abby Grant (Julie Graham), a woman whose strength comes from a burning need to find out if her young son is still alive. This brave new world brings an opportunity for new beginnings, but also terrible dangers – not just the daily struggle for food and water, but a deadly threat from other survivors.
Both shows have already broadcast in England.
And finally, the upcoming five-part Torchwood: Children of Earth will air in July on BBC America. End of Show has confirmed the series will air over five consecutive nights on both BBC One and BBC America. No word yet on the specific starting date for the mini-series. Writer Russell T Davies says “this series is one big serial and the most ambitious story we’ve ever made, and we’ve got plenty of surprises in store.” The returning cast includes John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness, Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper and Gareth David-Lloyd as Ianto Jones. Other regular cast involved in their high-octane adventure are Kai Owen as Rhys Williams, Gwen’s husband, and Tom Price as PC Andy.
I insist on cable tv just so I can get BBCA and the Sci-Fi channel. I know, I'm a geek. But the shows are so good!
