CineVegas ’09 saw the US debut of Las Vegas filmmakers Jerry and Mike Thompson’s feature film, Thor at the Bus Stop, a comedy detailing the last day of the Norse thunder god Thor before he faces the World Serpent in climactic battle. Pondering his sacrifice for a world that has forgotten him, Thor indirectly affects the lives of many Las Vegans in an existential journey that is notable for not including the famed Las Vegas Strip.
The feature grew from a short film of the same name the filmmaking brothers made in 2003 as well as a second short, Passenger Seat, both of which won numerous awards in various film festivals. Graduates of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ film school, the brothers accepted film professor David Schmoeller’s challenge to expand the shorts into a feature, produced by Schmoeller and fellow film grad May May Luong. The result has already screened at the 22nd Singapore International Film Festival, the Thailand World Comedy Festival, as well as CineVegas. Future festival appearances are pending.
Living and working in Las Vegas, the brothers’ short films often lean to the world of the fantastic. Las Vegans and sci-fi fans should keep an eye out for the future works of Jerry and Mike Thompson.
