Return of the king. Godzilla may stomp back to the big screen

Lugosi has Dracula, but he also had Plan 9 From Outer Space. Karloff was the Frankenstein monster, but also appeared in The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini.

Famous monsters never die. Well, I mean, they DIE, but they always come back for more. But has any monster had more of a roller-coaster career than the one and only “King of all Monsters,” Godzilla?

Big G had an impressive debut as an unstoppable force of nature back in 1954, but as the wacky pop-tart 60’s loomed, Godzilla morphed from monster to misunderstood monster to hero. Sure, he could still tear apart a city, but he became a beast with a heart of gold … kind of like a Wookie. And once you’ve pulled out the tiger’s teeth, it’s kinda hard to put them back.

Over the decades Godzilla has fought them all: smog monsters, giant moths, King Kong and even Bambi, but did Hollywood finally manage to do what the combined armed forces of the nations of the world were unable to do; kill Godzilla?

The last US-produced movie to star Godzilla was the 1998 Roland Emmerich directed feature. It opened with a respectable $55 million weekend despite mediocre reviews, but ultimately died on the vine with only $135 million in domestic box office, unfortunate with a reported $136 million budget.

Two years later, the Japanese-made Godzilla 2000 became the last appearance of the King on American movie screens.

All may not be lost, however. Reported today on BloodyDisgusting.com, Godzilla might just be on the cusp of resurrection. Legendary Pictures is rumored to be interested in bringing the radioactive-breathed behemoth back to the big screen.

Legendary Pictures is the financial force behind such recent successes as the two Christopher Nolan Batman features, 300, Superman Returns and The Hangover as well as upcoming features Jonah Hex and Clash of the Titans.

Perhaps something akin to a Godzilla Begins might reenergize the Creature Feature genre and put the King of all Monsters back on his throne.

The Big G was never so awesome as when he squashed poor Bambi. That'll teach that quadruped to jump out in front of interstate highway traffic! ;)
