DAPSSAV 2009 Stop The Violence Walk Committee
Chicago is experiencing an epidemic of violence in and around its schools.
A group of school bus drivers and friends aims to change that fact -- and they could use your volunteer help this Saturday morning.
The group, DAPSSAV (Drivers, Attendants, Parents, Students and Schools Against Violence), will hold on Saturday at 8 a.m. its second annual walk aimed at ending violence in and around schools.
The walk begins at Shepard High School, 13049 S. Ridgeland Ave, Palos Heights, and ends at the Alpha School Bus Company, 4702 W. Midlothian Turnpike, in Crestwood.
A rally and picnic at the end of the walk will be emceed by NBC5’s Rob Stafford and sponsored by a coalition of businesses, school districts and individuals. The Robbins Police Department has volunteered to staff the walk, while Robbins Police Chief Johnny Holmes will speak to participants at the end of the walk.
This year’s walk will be held in memory of Blair Holt, a 16-year old Julian High School student who died May 10, 2007, while riding a CTA bus home from school.
Mr. Holt’s classmate, Tiara Reed, told his family that he had shielded her from fatal gunfire.
Registration for Saturday’s walk is free. If you have not registered online, please arrive at Shepard High School no later than 6:30 a.m. Saturday.
