Is the Save Sarah Connor campaign a scam?

Fox has made it very clear that The Sarah Connor Chronicles won't be back.  The show's creator has vented on his blog about how it's over and done. But like the Terminators they're representing, the fans refuse to lay down and die.

This time, the Save the Sarah Connor Chronicles coalition wants to rent a mobile billboard to drive around Los Angeles for a mere $3500. Incredibly, loyal fans have been donating the cash and if you can believe their PayPal widget, they've already raised over $2500 dollars.

Wait. What? People are actually turning over money to some anonymous entity on the Internet in hopes of getting a mobile billboard that will likely have no effect at all? Do you know what your local school could do with $2500 dollars? A food bank? A homeless shelter?

I get that people have a right to spend money on whatever they want but is this really the best way for the fandom to show their power? Remember the Moonlight blood drive? Now that was brilliant. It helped the community, it was great PR, news outlets wanted to cover the event -- but a mobile billboard?

Blogger Nick C goes one step further. He says (in a very convincing blog post) that this whole effort is a scam. That the money raised will go into the pockets of the webmaster whether the total is raised or not. He points to a similar instance in the Moonlight fandom which no one seems to be denying.

Giving the Save Sarah Connor people the benefit of the doubt, what are they going to do if they don't reach their goal? Return every $5 donation to the person who sent it? Not likely. Though, looking at that donations widget, it's probably a moot point.

Let's get real, Sarah Connor fans. If you must raise money, put it to good use. Invest in science programs for schools - that would be an excellent way to tie the scifi series into something meaningful that could very well impact the future of the world, for real.

A food bank or homeless shelters? What do you think we are, hippies?

Nah, dont think it's a scam. to my knowledge savethescc.com has been up and running for a while and everything they said they'd do has been done. ie, the petition was UPSed to Peter Roth and tracking number was provided. besides, they've actually had contact with TSCC staff from Josh Friedman to Daniel Thomsen. If it were a tscc site that just popped up, i'd be more hesitant. If the 3500.00 isnt reached i'm sure it'll be donated to a worthy cause, firbomialgia or cancer research.

yeah im paranoid as it is, but this should make a statement on how committed some people are to get this show back, if people wanna give their money to support what they belive in, it's their choice, homeless shelters...get real

What the hell? Homeless shelters? Blood drive? People want to bring their favorite TV show back, not feed the homeless or cure HIV. I don't know where your head is, but I'll bet the place smells funny.

except how would terminator fans get press by donating to a science program? how would that grab the WB's attention. maybe once the fandom gets a solid stepping stone, they'll start investing in other things. but donating to a charity is the same as laying down arms and giving up. from what i can see, this fandom still has hope to bring the show back. how about showing a little support to this struggling community instead of bashing their hopes with self-righteous crap?

    Very disappointed with this article.

You guys should check your facts before making unfounded accusations like this. I know and will personally vouch for the guys at savethescc.com who are working hard to save the show they and we love.

As for schools and homeless shelters - you could say that about almost anything that anyone spends any money on. Get off your pompous high horse and try showing some support rather than slandering people who are trying to make a differnce.

Wow. I have to say, there is stupidity and overwhelming stupidity. This article contains a considerable amount of both. No seriously, few people can make themselves look like a complete moron so effectively.

I guess his article was so convincing to you that you decided to not even contact the people at savethescc.com to get a statement from them. Maybe NickC should be applauded for being able to force his opinions on weak-minded Examiner writers with absolutely no fact.

Epic Fail. EPIC. You should write a retraction.

So, campaigns to save shows are only valuable if they're to save shows you like and operate in a way you find acceptable? Gotcha. I also notice that you didn't bother to actually contact the SaveSCC website just repeated smears from another blog. Nice work. Before you move on from covering internent TV fandom, I suggest you review US libel laws.

Full disclosure: I am a SCC supporter. I have never even considered trying to help save a TV show until now. I do support the fight against AIDS, cancer, etc...
To be charitable to this post, I get the idea that we need to make sure people don't get scammed. But: you link the Nick C blog post as a *convincing* article that this is a scam? OK, lets check this out... so I read it and find it has NO real content - no facts or investigation. Basically is devoted to tagging every who IS devoted to trying to save this show as pretty much a clueless idiot (that comes through clearly). And it seems devoted to fanning his own ego as near as I can tell. Likewise, I see no facts in your post. /Sigh... not sure if I should feel angry or sad about this post. But the Nick C post - now THAT one is irritating - the word hubris comes to mind.
Good luck in your future posts.

Sometimes these campaigns need publicity to get off the ground (much like the Firefly fans raising money to advertise in Variety Magazine which lo and behold was not a scam). Maybe you can call it a "scam" in that it's not likely to magically bring the show back overnight, but it's an awfully loaded term. Did you guys even contact the people that are running the fund raising to get a comment for this article? Plus, why ask for such as small an amount as $3,500 and not more if it's just gonna go poof into some people's back pockets? I hope you have scotch guarded clothing cause if the billboard actually does run, there will be a lot of tomatoes flying.

Well perhaps its not a scam and the idea is well intentioned but we all know the cliche about intentions. It is at the very least a waste of good money. I loved the show but its dead and a single billboard isn't going to resurect it. I do hope as someone else said if the total isn't reached (perhaps even if it is)that the money is donated to a worthy cause where it might actually do some good instead of be wasted on a futile attempt. I am all for saving a favorite show when there is at least a slim chance but this one is dead and gone.

I would like to direct your attention to the invoice of the billboard which can be seen on savethescc's website (cant post links here)

As soon as the receipt is also posted up I shall be returning here to laugh at your ineptitude and will demand a public apology be issued to the people doing fantastic work at savethescc.

I keep looking, hoping for some good news but don't find it. Good luck to this effort, but it sounds futile. Hope I'm wrong. The whole TSCC fiasco is just one more reason to abandon network TV. They've abandoned a large segment of the viewers. Screw Fox! I have taken the pledge to not watch any Fox network shows live. If I watch one it will only be Tivoed skipping the commercials. If several million fans take the same pledge and let Fox know it, maybe they'd take notice.

Bottom line it's all about advertising dollars and they could care less about the quality of a show or the desires of it's viewers. All they really care about is the Nielsen ratings because that sets the price tag on commercial time. Until the system changes, we will continue to be disappointed by the network programming decisions. We can demand change if we can prove to them their money is at risk. That's the only language they understand.

Take the pledge and tell them! If enough do, they'll start to listen.

Get bent you hippy. People like you give us American Loving SF Residents a bad name. Why don't you sell your BMW and drive a Hyundai Cynthia Boris? Why don't you take a vow of poverty and give every cent you don't absolutely need and give it to the biggest scam artist of all The Dalai Lama so he can re-enslave the now liberated peasant classes of Tibet?

You know for one paycheck a year you could feed lepers in Micronesia... why are you so greedy Cynthia Boris, why do you choose to waste your money living in one of the most expensive areas in the world when you could live in a trailer in Los Banos and give 80% of your income to the addadictomy foundation?
