Last week, critics were calling it a long shot, but this week TV Guide's Matt Mitovich and EW's Michael Ausiello have both moved Dollhouse into the "likely to be renewed" column.
Dollhouse was one of the most anticipated new shows of the season thanks to the reputation of illustrious leader Joss Whedon. But after rumblings about new pilots being shot and conflicts with the network over style, hope began to wane and then the show was shoved to mid-season which meant it would be completely in the can before the first episode was even aired.
The downside of a finished run was that there was no way to correct on the fly when complaints starting filtering in when the show finally aired. People were confused by the tone, unsure of where the series was headed and everyone wanted to know why it didn't have the old Whedon spark. Whedon kept telling the fans to hang on, it would get better and it did, two episodes before the end. At that point, it seemed like a case of too little, too late but maybe not. . .
Yesterday, End of Show reported that fans of Dollhouse had swamped the Fox switchboard with calls demanding the show be renewed. It was the end result of series star Miracle Laurie posting the phone number on Twitter and asking fans to make the call. The Watch Dollhouse Twitter also called fans to action and they have over 1,000 subscribers -- so that's a lot of calls!
We'll never know for sure if it was the fan support that pushed Fox toward renewal but surely the public outcry didn't hurt the cause. At least they didn't bombard the Fox lot with thousands of lollipops. Dr. Saunders is nice. . .
Fox will make the official announcement one way or the other on Monday morning.
