The illegal immigration debate sputters to a start

The illegal immigration debate was set to begin Wednesday, June 17th but a scheduling conflict cancelled the bi-partisan meeting in Washington D.C. Perhaps fundamentally changing the world’s best health care system got in the way of amnesty proposals from the white house. Perhaps the brewing firestorm over the illegal firing of Inspector General Gerald Walpin distracted this administration from securing a campaign promise by President Obama to enact immigration reform in his first year. Whatever the case may be, our nation is struggling to cope with the effects of 12 million illegal citizens.

In Nebraska, we recently passed a bill that would deny public benefits to illegal citizens, and encourage private businesses to use the E-Verify system before hiring individuals. The bill will not directly curb the estimated $126 million tax payer burden associated with education, emergency medical care, and incarceration of illegal immigrants. However, the bill prohibits funds for public housing, retirement benefits, welfare benefits, post secondary education benefits, food assistance, and unemployment benefits. The bill does allow for K-12 students to attend schools, and provides emergency medical care regardless of citizenship status. Moreover, the children of illegal immigrants are still eligible to pay in-state tuition at Nebraska universities, colleges, and post secondary programs. For now it would seem that Nebraska is attempting to make Nebraska less attractive to illegal immigrants rather than recognizing the underlying issue: their presence in this country and this state is illegal. Nonetheless, the state of Nebraska is to be commended for their efforts, as this is a federal issue, one that has been botched and ignored leaving every state in the union in a bind.

Nations have borders as a matter of protection, just as nations have immigration laws in order to ensure an ordered society. An ordered society is to the benefit of all that participate in a particular society. The great failure to enforce our immigration laws and secure our borders has led Phoenix, Arizona to resemble Mexico City in terms of kidnapping and extortion crimes by Mexican drug cartels. Vote hungry politicians have jeopardized our safety as an open southern border has led to the proliferation of drug trade, weapons exchange, and with a destabilizing Mexican state, the threat of a terrorist attack grows more each day.

A simple pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants does not address the issue of border security, it merely secures a voting bloc for the Democrat party. Republicans pathetically attempted to secure that vote themselves with an amnesty push from John McCain, Lindsay Graham, and President Bush in 2007. Even after that effort, Hispanics overwhelmingly voted democrat in the 2008 elections, thereby rejecting Republican populous pandering. If our government was to act in our best interest, they would address our porous borders and the rampant crime associated with them before offering a pathway to citizenship for those that came here illegally. But our best interest is never the goal.

What of assimilation into our culture? The presence of millions of illegal immigrants has prompted multi-cultural studies to become its very own industry in America. American students are taught to respect other cultures at all costs, while seldom are the reminders of our own cultures uniqueness and beauty. Too often these programs devolve into multi- colorism rather than multi-culturalism, and our culture is chided as being selfish, greedy, and inhumane. It is no wonder then, after a generation of being led to believe that we are a bad country, with a bad system, and bad people, that illegal immigrants have shown virtually no interest in assimilating to our culture. Rather, as evidenced by the kidnapping rate in Arizona, the rise in violence and beheadings by gangs like the Latin Kings and MS-13, illegal immigrants have brought a piece of their culture with them, and we are worse off than we were.

Finally, it is time for a real solution. A solution that secures our borders, punishes illegal activity, and preserves the sovereignty of the United States. Perhaps a large National Guard presence on our borders would help. We could also offer illegal immigrants the opportunity to turn themselves in, deport, and return legally. If they wish not to report and deport, and they are found still to live here illegally, they should then be barred from reentering the nation. Our current immigration policies and unwillingness to enforce our laws is absolutely suicidal to a nation and a national identity. To reward illegal immigrants with a direct pathway to citizenship without punishment of any kind, and without first securing our borders will only serve to encourage others to break the law. We should celebrate and reward legal immigration, unfortunately we seem to be on the path to celebrating and rewarding illegal immigration instead.

We are a consensual society under a Constitution that provides rights, freedoms and the mechanics to create laws that we citizens live by. Citizens accept that breaking our laws results in proscribed punishments. An unholy alliance of lawbreaking illegal aliens, criminal employers and elected officials that look the other way are hypocrites and anarchists. They feel that they can pick and choose which laws are convenient for them to follow and willingly break those that are personally inconvenient. This breaks down our legal system and works against the rule of law that we depend upon for our daily safety and national security. All lawbreaking illegal aliens should be deported, all criminal employers should be jailed and elected officials that have failed to carry out their oath of office to defend the Constitution and our laws should be fired, voted out of office, impeached and perhaps charged with criminal dereliction of duty. The 1986 amnesty was a total failure. Never again!

HE MAJORITY OF--THE PEOPLE--MUST SPEAK UP OR SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES?

The only way that illegal immigration occupational army will be--ERADICATED--for good, is the paramount overwhelming pressure of public awareness bearing down on their Senators and Congressman? It will also forcibly remove the nefarious activities of criminals. THE COST TO SUPPORT THESE ILLEGAL PEOPLE IS UNCOUNTABLE! Say--YES--to e-verify! It will empty the workplace of illegal labor stealing jobs. Errors can be resolved at the Social Security office, where illegal workers wouldn't dare to go. Say--NO--to any AMNESTY. Outside of this--NOTHING WILL HAPPEN--EXCEPT ANOTHER PRE-ARRANGED AMNESTY, THAT TAXPAYERS WILL GET THE BILL FOR INFINITY. Brittanicus? Are you still at it? I thought your cut and paste was broken! LOL!

The will of the people was expressed. After a 20 year conservative voting record, I... and people like me... broke rank and voted differently at all levels because we recognize that pro-life and family values are not just reflected by Roe v. Wade. They are reflected by the way we treat the children, women and men walking in our midst. And that breaking laws in the name of upholding other laws is contradictory and self-serving. That men who don't respect marriage enough to keep their zippers up have no place "defending" it.

Yes - I was one Republican who was SICK of it. And I'm not impressed that Republicans got the message... so in 2010, guess how I'll be voting? Immigration reform affects my friends and family. So I'm voting for whomever supports AMNESTY!

This is a human right issue and we need to deal with it humanely. When lawmakers are instituting laws, they never think of it in the long run. They only come to realise their mistakes when it,s already affecting so many people; and this are people not aliens. When you call somebody and alien, take a look at yourself in the mirror and see if you look better than that person.Basically, what I,m trying say is that we should tone down the hate and self-centeredness.The system is broken and we need laws to reform it.So many people,s lives turn upside down every single day some due to their own fault and others because of the broken system. So we should each search our hearts and find a place for forgiveness.I hope my mail touches somebody positvely.Tell GOPs to practice what they learn in their bibles and stop being hypocrites

Mr. Yount, Very well written. Two gaps. In 1996, IIRAIRA was enacted and was an enforcement-only bill designed to end illegal immigration. Guess what - it failed. Second gap - the Republicans who promoted even more harsh measures drove Hispanics away from the party, not pro-immigration Republicans. Many speculate Hispanics have more in common with Republicans than Democrats, but are driven away by the anti-immigration, closed border rhetoric. Personally, I agree more with Reupblican positions but do not understand the official and predominant party position on immigration. Last point - E-Verify is a flawed system at many levels. Only 1.3 percent of the country's employers use the system, but these employers will soon be targeted for enforcement like fish in a barrel by use of data mining tools. Again, although I strongly disagree with you on your points, but you are a skilled writer and thinker.

what came first, jesus law?or your consitution and the laws your talking about?

we,human being are trying to pass a law that will allow a man to marry a man.it might become law too.
C how your ideology is going to make our nation disappear.
the law you talking about,is been abided by illegal immigrants more than us citizens, whom of which been here for 10 years and never had a parking ticket. Some laws are made to be broken, how many laws u disagree with honestly, sure you dont go and break it.But when you find your self married to a us citizen, and you have 3 kids to support, but u are considered illegal in this country and u cant support your family,,,,,u let me know what kind of law that will rule to seperate families, and u tell me either u break it and stay with your family,or abide it and let them tear your family a part.

Benjamin, thanks for the question. Read Romans 13, 1-6. We are to obey the government's laws, period, or suffer the consequences. Many of our laws carry jail time as a possible penalty for breaking them, even crossing the border illegally. Americans with children that commit crimes carrying jail time are frequently torn away from their children. Frankly, for illegal aliens that face deportation, I would think those with strong family values would automatically take the children with them to their home countries, if deported. Seems like a no-brainer if you're family oriented. Bottom line, don't do the crime if you can't take the consequences.

Mexico wants our land for their burgeoning population and they will get it unless we say NO to amnesty. Amnesty for 12-20 million illegals, who will then bring in their huge extended families, equals 100 million more people in the USA by 2020.

benjamin, You made a really great point.
Family comes first. I hope and pray that Obama helps us families that are going to have our families split up due to the immigration laws. I am an American, my DH is from another country and we have 3 wonderful children together and he does have TPS, but we keep being told that he will have to go back to his birth place and may take the chance of never coming back, and he has nothing on his record.
    Americans brake the law everyday!!!!

Many Blacks, such as myself, get very upset with the influx of illegals. And, we get even madder at so-called black leaders who want us to team with the illegal immigrants to "help" them get their rights. Illegal immigrants don't have my best at heart. I am an American first and all Americans, regardless of race, better band together!

Hispanics are here to stay. They are the largest minority in the nation and growing. Hispanics (legal, US born, and illegal) are involved in every aspect of the country's life, from government, military, law, cleaning dishes, cutting grass, etc.......
why waste your time complaining about "the invasion" accept reality and embrace Hispanics just as Hispanics eventually will embrace "America" division is not the answer. Something the real enemies of this nation want.

Pancho - Americans welcome immigrants. We do not welcome people who break laws like coming to American illegally where they do not pay taxes, they commit crimes (like when they "bought" my social security number and used it for to get jobs and cell phones! that's identity theft!), etc. If they came legally we would not care. We do not like it when Americans do things illegally either like the coyotes who help them get here. Hispanics are welcome if they follow the rules. Who are they to just come and do whatever they want without respecting the country they are coming to? Do some research about how much money American citizens spend on illegal immigrants and tell me why it is my responsibility to pay for their healthcare, etc. because it is not my job to support people who break laws.

The age-old pesky U.S.-Mexico border problem has taxed the resources of both countries, led to long lists of injustices, and appears to be heading only for worse troubles in the future. Guess what? The border problem can never be solved. Why? Because the border IS the problem! It's time for a paradigm change.

Never fear, a satisfying, comprehensive solution is within reach: the Megamerge Dissolution Solution. Simply dissolve the border along with the failed Mexican government, and megamerge the two countries under U.S. law, with mass free 2-way migration eventually equalizing the development and opportunities permanently, with justice and without racism, and without threatening U.S. sovereignty or basic principles.

For details, Google "Megamerge Dissolution Solution".
