Taco vs. sandwich
After receiving a coupon in the mail for a new Navajo fry bread spot pimping sandwiches, I decided to stop by and give it a try. What I learned: A fry bread sandwich is not all that different from the fry bread taco (see photo).
For those who've never had fry bread, the consistency is that of a fluffier, crispier tortilla or a flat donut. "Sandwich" or taco filling is piled on top and eaten by folding the bread in half, or with a fork and knife.
At Sacred Hogan, taco toppings have a Mexican food flavor: Red and green chili beef, beans, tomatoes and cheese. These come in 2 sizes, full and the only slightly smaller half size. The lamb sandwich combines lamb, lettuce and tomatoes on a piece of fry bread and comes in only one size. Unless you're really a lamb lover, my suggestion would be a half order of a Native American Taco.
Whatever the choice, schedule a post-lunch nap to digest.
There are a few different purveyors of fry bread around Phoenix:
