Pan con Pollo at Guanaq
From the outside, Salvadorian restaurant Guanaquito's looks a little ghetto (Maybe it's the bullet hole in the window?).
Located on McDowell between 14th and 15th street, it's the sort of place that would get passed by unnoticed, unless of course, you were looking for it. It's worth a look.
After reading a Chowhound post, naming Guanaquito's as "my favorite hole-in-the-wall joint in Phoenix" and describing the yuca dishes, papusas and other Salvadorian delectables, it seemed worth of an adventure-lunch.
Inside, the restaurant is spacious, open, and larger than it appears from the outside. Photos of historic Phoenix dot the walls. The service is friendly, and the food is delicious.
The Pan con Pollo ($4.99) is the only sandwich on the menu and can stand on its own: A soft roll with tomato, cucumber, fresh herbs and piping hot chicken in a mustard-flavored sauce. A ramekin of the aforementioned sauce is include alongside for dipping. The juicy sandwich is a little messy, but in a very good way.
Also worth mentioning: The pork and cheese filled tortillas, aka papusas. Whether or not they are in the "sandwich" family is debatable, the yummy taste, however, is not.

I just went there this week on Monday based on this review and the place was closed. I arraived at 11:15 am and their sign says they are open from 10. However, the door was locked, no one inside and all the lights are off. Have they gone out of business already?
Hmmm...I'll check it out
