Four former San Jose Giants have been added to the 40-man roster of the parent San Francisco Giants. They are pitcher Kevin Pucetas, first baseman Brett Pill, and outfielders Darren Ford and Francisco Peguero
Their placement on the 40-man roster protects these players from the Rule 5 draft in December and increases the possibility they’ll see major league action in 2010.
Ford and Peguero were part of San Jose’s 2009 California League Championship team. Ford struggled in the first half with switch-hitting then stuck to hitting from the right side in the second half and ended the season as a .300 hitter.
The 21-year-old Peguero hit a combined .353 with Augusta and Salem-Keizer. He was called up to San Jose for the playoffs and was named MVP of the championship series.
Pucetas was 10-6 with a 5.04 ERA in 28 starts for Fresno in 2009. He owns a career Minor League record of 42-13.
Pill drove in 109 runs for Connecticut and was named to the postseason Eastern League All-Star team.
San Francisco also granted free agency to several minor league players, many of whom played in San Jose. One of them was former first round pick Craig Whitaker, who pitched in San Jose and Connecticut in 2009. He went 1-1 with a 3.89 ERA in 26 games with the Giants before being promoted to Double-A in late July.
Also released were pitchers Trey Webb, Mike Musgrave, Kelyn Acosta, Matt Kinney, Osiris Matos, Kelvin Pichardo, Ronnie Ray and Ryan Sadowski, catchers Steve Holm and Todd Jennings, infielder Jake Wald and outfielder Mike Mooney.
