EDIT: 12:58 p.m. PT- The contract for Carr is $6.25 million, with another $1.87 million worth of incentives for two years.
With the signing of former #1 overall pick David Carr this weekend, the quarterback situation in San Francisco just got a little bit interesting.
Along with Carr, the 49ers have four quarterbacks on their roster: Last year's fifth-round pick Nate Davis, backup veteran Shaun Hill and starting quarterback Alex Smith. Except for Davis, the other three have all had NFL regular season experience and can battle for the starting position.
From ESPN, here is a comparison of the three:

With the signing of Carr, Hill might be released by the team. Hill is in his last year of his contract, and is due to make $1.5 million. Despite being the only quarterback on the roster to have a career winning record as a starter (and partially responsible for helping Mike Singletary secure a head coaching position), Hill will be the odd man out.
Carr's physical skills (mobility and arm strength) fit better into the now revamped offense of Jimmy Raye. The offense now is made to cater to Smith's style of football and the team believes Carr is the quarterback that can execute it better than Hill.
Carr can push Smith to play to a higher level this upcoming. And if Smith was to struggle, the 49ers will feel more confident in Carr jumping into the mix. That feeling is not the same when it comes to Hill.
It seems that the 49ers are sold on moving forward with the signing of Carr to fit into the new offense. In their mind, Hill might not be the right guy for the offense. Hill just doesn't fit into the mix right now.

- Former 49ers wide receiver Arnaz Battle has agreed to a three-year deal with the Steelers. His blocking skills and his familiarity with former special teams coach Al Everest must have sealed the deal.
- The Redskins and Seahawks have expressed interest in Free agent tackle Barry Sims. Retaining Sims in San Francisco as a backup might be the most ideal move for the 49ers. His ability to play right and left tackle is very important.
- The agent of former Raiders running Justin Fargas has been in contact with the 49ers, but no meeting has been scheduled.
- Tight end Chris Baker is on the 49ers' radar. The 49ers might want to bring him in as their blocking tight end.

Great move signing David Carr. Best free agent acquisition since Antonio Bryant (not sure if we got him through free agency or not). Although with us, that's not saying much.
Scratch that... Justin Smith was better. I still stand by saying Carr is better than Clements considering how much we paid for Clements and how little we paid for Carr.
Aubrayo Franklin turned out OK for SF too.
I guess it's safe to say Tebow is off our radar?
Now we just need to get a BUS in front of the CARR!
No, we need to throw Scott M UNDER the bus...
thank you nfl you will be sorry
Will this team every get winners or just experiment with losers. long time fan but this is getting retarded. does anyone really expect smith or carr to do any better then last year. Its just is getting very taxing cheering for this team that doesn't want to win. from the top down the need to change. soon enough the nfc west will wake up and this team will be no different.
I disagree with Prai. the niners do want to win and when you look at the drafts of the past couple of years we have done fairly well with our early round picks. balmer is the only one who has not panned out. we are building a core of players who are learning how to win in the nfl. the defense has improved steadily since nolan's hybrid crap left town. the offense for the first time in almost nine years has the same coordinator. having an improved offense will make our individual defensive numbers decline but make the overall product better, top 10 next year. i believe we are finally heading in the right direction and we should plan on holding this course for the foreseeable future.
this year should be a very telling year as to the overall health of our organization. if we continue to wallow in mediocrity, a non-winning season, then i would feel that there needs to be changes.
Gordon, respectfully, I would say Alex Smith and Manny Lawson also didn't pan out. So that would only make it 2 out of 5...
I'm glad we got carr....altho he has a pretty bad reputation,he did well in new york,so hopefully he will do good in sf. Now get rid of hill!
