The 49ers' only practice Sunday came in the afternoon in which the team practiced with a lot of sweeps and misdirection plays. I wasn't at Sunday's camp, but from the updates from Matt Maiocco and Matt Barrows, the 49ers are expanding their playbook on different ways of running the ball.

Barrows was impressed with Glen Coffee and Kory Sheets during the running drills. Thomas Clayton hasn't been getting as many look as Sheets has.

Quarterback Alex Smith started with the first unit today. On the 11 on 11 drills, a lot of the plays were designed for short immediate routes. However, a few passes were thrown deep. Most notable reception was a deep pass to Josh Morgan-- a one handed catch.

Nate Davis also got playing time today. Veteran Damon Huard didn't see any action with the offense.

Fullback Moran Norris returned to the latter part of the practice. He didn't participate, but should have the pads on for Monday.

Dre Bly took over the cornerback spot for Tarell Brown. Brown was out with a toe sprain.

With linebacker Parys Haralson out with a hip injury, Ahmad Brooks stepped in and looked very impressive. Brooks is one of the linebackers that I hope makes an impact this season.

Another impressive performance for the past two practices was tight end Vernon Davis. On Saturday, a good portion of the passes was thrown at his direction and the same happened on Sunday. It looks great for the 49ers to get Davis involved in the passing game.

One thing to note about the 49ers and their first two days of practice is that we might already get an idea of which players are already making an impact. Davis' early going is a great sign of things to come for him and the offense. And as for the defense, it looks like the linebacker group will have a lot of opportunities to shine. Both Manny Lawson and Ahmad Brooks are two players I want to keep an eye on during camp.

Tomorrow, the 49ers are back to their normal schedule with practices at 8:30 AM and 4:20 PM.
