Michael Crabtree and his agent, Eugene Parker, did make it to the Bay Area on Tuesday to meet with the 49ers on contract negotiations.
During the afternoon, 49ers president Jed York, GM Scot McCloughan and Vice President of Football Operations Paraag Marathe sat down with the first round draft pick and his agent. As of 8:45 PM on Tuesday, a deal has yet to be made.
What's interesting about the development about the deal is that since Crabtree and Parker were willing to come all the way out to California, it must be a sign that they were willing to sign a contract.
The 49ers at this point probably will offer something along the lines of what they had originally planned to offer Crabtree. However, to make both sides happy, the 49ers will probably offer the same contract but add another year to it. That would make it a six-year deal. The annual rate will be the same, but the contract is bigger. That should be the "fluff" that might get the rookie signed. It makes Crabtree look like he got a bigger deal, but in reality, he didn't get a dime more than the original offer. The 49ers could possibly put a clause in which the wide receiver can become a free agent after the fifth year.
This ongoing saga will be something that will drag on to Wednesday. Both Parker and Marathe were reportedly the last two people in the meeting room at a hotel near the 49ers headquarters.
Around 4:00 PM, Crabtree was seen leaving the hotel avoiding a couple reporters. He was reported to have sprinted away from the media and into a car waiting for him. I guess his foot has fully healed.
A twist to this is that waiting for Crabtree in the car is former rapper MC Hammer.
Matt Maiocco says that he was told that Crabtree told MC Hammer "Get it done" as he got into the car.
How does MC Hammer (a Bay Area native) factor into this whole ordeal?
MC Hammer supposedly had former 49er and current Crabtree advisor Deion Sanders as a housemate in Fremont while Deion Sanders was a 49er for the 1994 season. And the other connection between Sanders and MC Hammer:
Sanders has been hinting at a lot of Crabtree news in recent weeks, so this connection makes some sense even though it is a little strange. However, Maiocco confirms that Parker and MC Hammer are friends and that's all there is in that connection.
As of now, nothing has been signed and somehow, a legendary rap star is somehow in the mix.
