Is this a new 49ers logo? I hope not.
One of the readers on Mining the Gold Rush, my 49ers blog, left a comment in one of my recent posts on the 49ers uniforms. He goes by the name of Matt and this was what he said:

I went over to the site and saw that NFL.com provides cell phone wallpapers. That's a pretty cool feature. But by looking at the images labeled "secondary", the image on the right appears.
Is anyone familiar with this logo? It has never been used in any official games or merchandise to my knowledge. Yet why would this be available unless it's a design for the future?
This design features black like the current logo and also features dropshadows like the current uniform numbers on the team. But what's with the shield? The only shield that I liked was this old school one. Is this the 49ers' attempt to add a little old with the new? Your thoughts on this?

that is one UGLY logo. like "sneak out of the house in the morning hoping to god you never gave her your phone number" ugly. Dont tell me that the niners, in San Francisco, in this economy, cant find a better graphic designer that that.
My hope is that it's just some random alternate for their current logo and has nothing to do with the new design for the 2009 season.
They should just resort to the old school shield if this really is the new logo.
That has been on the NFL shop for over a year - its a gimmicky logo that people use for "customized" shirts/sweatshirts
That's strange. I frequent the online NFL Shop and this is the first I've seen it. Maybe I haven't been looking at the right products.
That logo looks like Warner Bros. meets the 49ers, there is way that could be the new logo. Th-th-th-that sucks folks!
That should never replace the SF logo.

The logo looks like a rip off of the Warner Brothers logo. The franchise shouldn't mess with the interlocking SF in the red oval logo. It's iconic!
Well, some sources that I've talked to have confirmed that this is not the new logo for the team.
It won't be replacing my computer background screen with the classic SF oval anytime soon!
What the hell is that? Are the 9ers suppose to be the WB? I know the 9er's are moving to Santa Clara, but that doesn't mean they got remove the SF from the logo. Look at the Giants and Jets playing in Jersey!
I respect the shield concept, but they definitely, should not, and WILL NOT scrap the "SF" and throw this thing on the helmet instead. If they want to pull off some kind of shield logo for shoulders or a patch on the front, then fine by me: it needs some serious work though, cause this one looks mediocre at the very best.
I like the old school ideas they're coming up with, and I kind of hope they come up with a decent hybrid of the 80's uniform...just as long as this here logo isn't a sign of the hybrid to come...in that case, screw it.
People need to stop freaking out, it is just the secondary logo. If you look back on that page I sent and go to the primary logo you may notice that the red is back to the 80's cherry instead of the darker red.
