The Rams have cut ties with wide receiver Torry Holt. Holt has been with the Rams since 1999 and would be a very nice fit for the 49ers.
Before I dive into the talk of Holt and the 49ers, we have to remember that Hold turns 33 in June and the 49ers are in the process of developing young receivers.
However, if the 49ers do make a grab at Holt, there is a chance that veteran Isaac Bruce might stay for the final year of his contract to play with his old "Greatest Show on Turf" buddy. However, if that does happen, then the 49ers would have a load of receivers on the roster.
- Torry Holt
- Isaac Bruce
- Arnaz Battle
- Jason Hill
- Josh Morgan
- Brandon Jones
- Dominique Zeigler
Would the signing of Holt slow down the development of the young receivers? Or would he help these receivers develop?
Realistically, the 49ers could sign Holt for a two-year contract. if Bruce does retire after this season, that leaves the team with one proven veteran and possibly a handful of developed receivers. I can still see Morgan and Jones as our deep threat as Hill becomes the team's possession receiver.
I don't think it would hurt if the 49ers tried to get Holt. And with Bruce on the team, that might be an incentive for him to come to The City. I am not going to get my hopes up, but it would be nice not to see Holt twice a year, but all season long.

I'm pretty sure Battle will be our possession receiver.
Battle has been our possession receiver, but Hill has also shown his ability to catch the big, important third down catches.
Are you kidding. Holt will not come here! He's a FA - he'll go to a team with a gunslinger not a dink a dunk qb
Actually, I am not kidding. ESPN's John Clayton cites that the Niners might be in the running. But aside from him, Holt might want to reunite with Bruce. Besides, Holt would want to go to a team where he knows he is the #1 receiver. Also, we don't know how the 49ers offense will work.
If anything, I don't think he'd sign a long-term deal. So if he doesn't like it, he can just leave after maybe one or two seasons.
O DEAR BABY JESUS..................... PLEASE sigh HOLT he is still leathal 49ers u have been greedy with your cap room now sighn tory holt ur not just blown money ur puttin ur pritty much bring'n the 49ers back 2 the playoffs......AHMEN
If Holt DOES want to come here, the 49ers should pursue.
would be nice but only if bruce leaves
Bruce leaving? I think Bruce would be the reason why Holt would want to come here.
i agree with doo. the only way we sign holt is if bruce leaves. the 49ers arent looking for either one to be a long term solution, just a mentor for the young wrs. if bruce is gone, then holt is automatically our #1 wr, which is something he is probably looking for. and john clayton only said the niners are in the running becauser they are in need of wr depth. there is still no concrete evidence that shows otherwise.
By adding Holt it will only get better, Young players learn from old pro's, Opens up the running game
I agree with Bruce's departure as a way for him to come. But how important is Bruce's stay to Holt's arrival? Bruce might be the determining factor to Holt's desire to come to SF.
im just trying to look at it realistically. having both bruce and holt is redundant. if bruce comes back, thats where the conversation end because im pretty they would keep him (yes, although holt is better). i think holts decision to go to the 49ers is based more on the offensive scheme on less on bruce's situation.
That is true. And we also have to remember that Holt probably wants to be #1 where he goes and in SF, he's be #1 over Bruce regardless.
YEAH now that i think about it , bruce and holt both play'n 4 the 9ers My dads a Rams fan i remeber him wake'n up sream'n in the night HAVE N A NIGHTMARE JUS LIKE THIS
I understand the 49ers aren't too interested in Holt because of his history of knee injuries. Also I don't think the 49ers wud be willing to pay $8 million for him.
P.S. I think Bruce was our possession receiver last year, not battle or hill. He was the go to guy when we needed a first down.
