The San Francisco 49ers have cut ties with quarterback Nate Davis after only spending one season with the team. The move was made on Monday to make room for 2006 Heisman trophy winner Troy Smith, whom the 49ers signed to a one-year deal. Smith was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2007 and was cut this weekend.

Here is some information on Smith from the official press release:

Smith (6-0, 217), formerly a fifth-round selection (174th overall) by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2007 NFL Draft, has appeared in 14 games (2 starts) during his three-year career. He has completed 48 of 89 pass attempts for 558 yards, three touchdowns, one interception and a quarterback rating of 79.7. Smith, who is 1-1 as a starter, has also registered 109 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 29 carries.

Smith, a 26-year old from Cleveland, OH, starred collegiately at Ohio State, where he won the 2006 Heisman Memorial Trophy and led the Buckeyes to the 2007 BCS National Championship Game. He was also the first starting quarterback in the school’s history to win three straight games against Michigan.

Smith attended Glenville High School in Cleveland, OH, where he played alongside his future Ohio State and 49ers teammate WR Ted Ginn Jr. The Buckeye was also a college teammate of 49ers T Alex Boone (2005-06).

The disappointment from Davis has hit a low point with his release. A couple weeks ago, head coach Mike Singletary made it public that the former fifth round pick had not developed as well as he should have. Singletary stated that Davis did not prepared as well as he should have this offseason and that he was behind on several important aspects of the playbook.

When asked about it, Davis agreed that he should have worked harder and could have done better. Davis was drafted by the 49ers last year in the fifth round out of Ball State and the team was well-aware of his learning disability.

Davis came into the 49ers with a great arm and potential to be the quarterback of the future for the team. But after one season, the 49ers have decided that he probably wasn't going to be a good fit with the team. Davis is eligible for the practice squad if the 49ers choose to keep him there.
