49ers take LB Scott McKillop in the 5th round

DRAFT POST WILL BE MOVED UP TO THE TOP AS THE 49ERS APPROACH PICK #171

The 49ers have taken linebacker Scott McKillop from Pittsburgh with the 146th overall pick. He was a Senior Bowl guy and he is a hard hitter. I don't know much about him, but here's a scouting report from Draft Countdown:

Strengths:
Adequate size...Great instincts and awareness...Good tackler...Decent range and moves well laterally...Is super tough...Competitive and intense...Has a terrific motor...Smart with an outstanding football IQ...A hard worker  and team leader...Was extraordinarily productive.

Weaknesses:
Not a great athlete...Average speed...Needs to get stronger...Struggles when forced to take on and shed blockers...Lacks fluid hips...Takes some poor angles...Sub par hands and ball skills in coverage...Can be too aggressive at times ... Is not a great pass rusher ...Upside is limited.

I am not sure how they would use him, but I had hoped they would secure a tackle first since I know Marvel Smith won't be the answer for the future.

He doesn't look so big and he doesn't look so strong. He is a big hitter, but I don't know if he can handle the hits that he will endure in the position. I am sure he would end up being a solid player, but I believe we could have gotten him in a later round. He does sound like a Singletary kind of guy, so maybe this isn't as bad as it seems.

Scott McKillop is the best ou there. Everybody underestimates his athletic ability but i dont considering he lead the nation in tackles his jr. year and was 5 th in tackles his senior year. This man is a complete warrior and will fit right in the 49ers association. He is also a very polite and respectfull young man

One thing I know he will benefit from is learning from Willis and Spikes. He can definitely become a solid LB in the league.
