49ers sign Smith, release Jennings

The 49ers have released often injured tackle Jonas Jennings and have signed former Steeler tackle Marvel Smith to take over the right tackle spot, according to Matt Maiocco.

Smith's deal is for two years at a around $10.5 million. With the likeliehood of Barry Sims and Adam Snyder being backups, Smith should easily help fill the need at the right tackle spot. Also, with Smith's signing, the 49ers might not try to get a tackle with their first pick in the Draft.

Smith missed 17 games the past two seasons due to back injuries, but it looked like Smith didn't receive any other offers from any teams.

Jennings had signed a seven-year deal in 2005, but injuries has plagued his stay in San Francisco. His released saves the 49ers $3.108 million in cap room this season.
