49ers hoping to fool Manning and the Colts

When asked about his team's preparation for Peyton Manning, San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Greg Manusky said he hoped to be one step ahead of the three-time MVP.

“I think you’ve got to kind of just sit back and watch what he’s doing and take it from there," said Manusky. "He’s seen thousands of looks, and we’re just going to try to play our defense and hopefully everything will work out.”

And containing the very dangerous Manning will be a tough task for the 49ers. Manning is fourth in the league in passing yards (1,880) and second in touchdown passes (15). Manusky believes that the 49ers defense must outsmart Manning and find ways to just fool him to stand a chance on Sunday.

“I’d love to fool him," said Manusky. "I think both. I think you’ve got to out-execute him. He’s a talented quarterback. He’s seen all the looks. He knows what Cover 2 looks like. He knows what Cover 4 looks like. He knows what man looks like. He’s pretty good at it and he’s talented. He’s been doing that for a long time. So, I’d love to.”.

One issue the 49ers faced last Sunday was the miscommunication of calls from the defensive radio signal in Patrick Willis' helmet. Some defensive calls did not make it out to the secondary since Willis is usually facing away from the secondary. On one particular play, the Texans' Owen Daniels would score on a 42-yard touchdown pass because the secondary did not know what the play call was.

Safety Dashon Goldson will not be wearing the radio receiver in his helmet in hopes that he can relay the calls better to the rest of the secondary and avoid big plays from the Colts.

The 49ers will need all those calls to go perfectly just to give themselves a chance to outsmart Manning.

Offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye confirmed that the offense will not change its approach with a new quarterback under center. With Alex Smith now starting, Raye said that the team will still continue to operate the same way it has since the beginning of the season.

I think this game will either revive or completely destroy the 49ers emotionally. They see themselves as a winning team as of now, but how long will that be true?
