49ers approach deadline without new deal set for Aubrayo Franklin

Aubrayo Franklin is hoping for an extension.
(49ers.com)

Nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin has been waiting for a new contract extension from the San Francisco 49ers. But with the deadline for franchise players to sign multi-year contracts today, Franklin is likely not to receive a new deal. He will play the 2010 season under a one-year contract.

The one-year franchise tag will pay Franklin $7.003 million for this upcoming season. A new multi-year extension cannot be completed until after the regular season is over.

Franklin emerged as one of the league's best nose tackles in 2009. The 49ers put the franchise tag on Franklin as he was scheduled to hit the free agency market this off-season. In keeping Franklin, the 49ers are hoping that they can view Franklin's performance for the 2010 season and determine whether or not they should sign him to a bigger contract.

If Franklin does perform well, he could demand a lot of money as a free agent and the 49ers, if unwilling to sign him to a huge multi-year deal, might have to use the franchise tag again.

An added factor into whether or not we sign franklin to a long=term deal is how well jean-francois can pick up playing the nose. if there is no drop off in the play at that position when he is in the game then the value of franklin goes down a bit. would the niners want to pay him big money in order to have two good nose tackles on the team?

That is something that is also worth considering. I would think that the team would want to keep Franklin regardless because of experience. But getting RJF the opportunity to play has been something the 49ers have also looked into. RJF has been taking advantage of this during OTAs since Franklin has been sitting out.
