There have been the likes of Jack Kemp, John Hadl, Dan Fouts, Stan Humphries and others who have been under center and had great careers for the San Diego Chargers. Then there was Ryan Leaf.
Probably best described as the biggest bust in the team's history, Leaf has another bust now to worry about.
Leaf, chosen as the second overall draft pick by the Chargers in the 1998 NFL Draft, was indicted this week by a grand jury in Randall County, Texas, The charges include seven counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud, one count of delivery of a simulated controlled substance, and one count of burglary of a habitation.
The burglary charge requires a sentence, if convicted, of 2 to 20 years. Each of the other counts could carry up to a two-year sentence in a state jail. According to reports, Leaf was undergoing drug rehab in British Columbia, Canada when he was indicted.
Leaf, who was most recently a coach at West Texas A&M University on the football and golf teams, played three unspectacular seasons in the NFL before retiring. He threw for just under 3,700 yards in three seasons, 14 touchdowns and 36 interceptions.
I guess it is no surprise the path that Ryan Leaf has followed. Whether it was destiny or not, the stars have just not aligned for this guy.
For Leaf, his life has almost mirrored his football career....one turnover after another.
