It was a long and tough night at the Salt Palace this past Saturday. Our Salt City Roller Derby held a double-header bout, first match against the Lava City Smokin' Ashes, then a league match between Death Dealers and Sisters of No Mercy.
Lava City struck first blood, taking a 5-point lead in their first jam, but Salt City struck right back, holding a slim lead through most of the first half. The tough defense on both sides kept the scores close, at halftime Salt City was down 40-44. After the break, the Smokin' Ashes began to pull ahead with as much as a 14 point lead. Our Shakers kept fighting back, cutting away at the lead. As the final jam of the night began, it was Shakers 74, Smokin' Ashes 77. The final jam ended in a sea of referee controversy, but when the dust settled the final score stood with Lava City squeaking by a 3-point win.
Salt City is now ranked 16th in the WFTDA power rankings, and the win has propelled Lava City to 14th. We have 4 more WFTDA bouts scheduled this year, including a road trip to Oregon where Salt City will get a rematch against Lava City on September 18.
The second half of the evening's events was a rematch between the Death Dealers and Sisters of No Mercy. Last year's bout between the two was the decisive bout that would send one of the teams to the league championship against the undefeated Leave it to Cleavers. The first half saw these two teams battling fiercely, with both teams constantly filling the penalty box. At the end of the first half it was a close 34-36, with the Sisters in the lead. That was the last time the Sisters looked in control of the bout. Death Dealers took a 50-40 lead after the first few jams of the second half, extending it to 63-40 after 11 minutes. Then a full 2-minute jam, where the Dealers scored 15 points, and it was clear they were going to deliver a killing win. In ninja-like style, the Dealers kept pounding away at the naughty nuns, finishing the bout with a 120-54 final score.
Next bout is May 15, and it will be a double-header with all the home teams. Reigning champions, Leave it to Cleavers will go against Sisters of No Mercy, and Death Dealers will take on Bomber Babes. The bouts will be at the Salt Palace, 6pm. Tickets are now available at SmithsTix $12 in advance, or $16 at the door.
