I was pleasantly surprised when Laura Truby, a Sales Consultant of CBeyond, encouraged me to attend the Houston leg of the Business is Booming Tour. It was held at the Westin Galleria in Houston TX on May 20th, 2010, and this event allowed everyone in the audience to come away from the event with profitable and actionable ideas. Several 'lights' came on for me after attending. The first thing that Bradley Sugars, president of ActionCoach, will tell you is to "take the word 'small' out of small business. It is a business. They are merely very large businesses in training." This was a clever way to change our paradigm about how we view our business.

Sugars also says that "a business is a commercial, profitable enterprise that works without me. If I have to be there, it is not really a business, it is a job."

'If I have to be there, it is not really a business, it is a job.

Sugars masterfully presented 28 reasons why 'Business is Booming' right now for him and a number of other businesses his firm works with. One of many principles presented as to why many businesses are booming is because of their attitude. "Planning to succeed" instead of "planning not to fail" is essential to having a successful business. One of the formulas he used was: "Dream x Goal x Plan x Action" = The Results or success we desire.

Business owners have a tendency to get involved in doing the wrong type of work according to Sugars, so he asked the audience if they find themselves doing 'employee work' or 'owner's work'. Sugars said that this is key because "saving a wage costs you a future" and that many business owners end up creating another job instead of actually owning a business. He encouraged the audience to develop systems for each part of the business that will help bring long-term beneficial results. This philosophy is similar to concepts presented in two other books I have read. These include Michael Gerber's book entitled The E-Myth Revisited and also The Cashflow Quadrant by Robert Kiyosaki.

Throughout the program Sugars did a masterful job of weaving in real-life examples to help us fully absorb the concepts he presents. I highly recommend attending one of the remaining dates on the 'Business is Booming Tour'. The schedule shows that Sugars will be nearby in Louisiana on September 28th. I have not had an opportunity to read one of Sugars' 14 books that he has written, but I plan to do so very soon after attending this seminar.

I attended a Brad Sugar seminar about 3 years ago and , while he is a very good, and charismatic, public speaker, I found myself very troubled by the end of the day. He obviously knows how to make money by buying/building/selling businesses and real estate, but much of the seminar focused on how much money he had made, and all of the expensive things he is able to buy with it. Expensive homes and cars, luxury vacations, and of course the diamond encrusted watch he invited everyone to take a peek at while they were purchasing his books and cd's after the lecture....I found it very sad. Values like that are why our country is in the mess it's in right now.

Hi, thanks for your feedback Trish. I understand. The time period of 3 years ago was is in the height of the economic boom and a lot of people's focus were on the wrong things and were getting in debt to their eyeballs. I can't speak for his presentation back then, but it wasn't the focus in this presentation.

Brad must have heard from folks like yourself because this presentation had a much different feel than what you described. One of the things he did say about money is that having a lot of it doesn't make you a better or worse person but it does give freedom.

He focused on helping to improve our mindset and gave very good actionable ideas to use right now in our business. I shared the elevator with a nice couple who own a hospitality staffing business called Host Staff leaving the seminar who just started a couple of months ago using the concepts and they love the results they are getting so far. They've been in business for years, but this month and last will be their best
