At 7:17 am (AEDT) on Thursday, 11/19/09, Jessica Watson and Ella's Pink Lady crossed the equator into the northern hemisphere. This was at 3:17 pm on Wednesday 11/18/09 is U. S. Eastern Time.
After traveling over 3,200 nautical miles since her departure from Sydney, Australia 30 days ago, the 16 year-old solo sailor has satisfied a major requirement of those needed for her planned circumnavigation.
Along with crossing every line of longitude, it was necessary for her to cross the equator. This is necessary since her voyage - after she heads south toward Cape Horn - will be a southern route around the globe.
