A small but enthusiastic crowd gathered for “Reke ROY” night, a Kings promotion for Tyreke Evans’ Rookie of the Year bid. Through the first half, the night appeared headed for failure. The Kings managed just 40 points, looking out of rhythm offensively. But in a rare flip-flop from most nights in which the Kings fall flat in the second half, the Kings exploded in the third quarter. They scored 43 points in the frame, and after a productive final period, the Kings sent the fans home buzzing about a winning performance, 113-90 over Toronto.

1 – It was Tyreke Evans’ night, and he made sure it was a special one. With even more attention than usual, Evans was everywhere. He attacked the rim and despite traffic, he made an array of circus shots, including one from behind the backboard. Evans’ offensive execution was crisp – he didn’t dominate the ball or dribble out the shot clock. His play was unselfish. His triple-double (19 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists) was the Kings first since Brad Miller in 2007, and it being on a night honoring Evans made it much sweeter.

2 – Two bigs came off the bench to provide critical contributions defensively. Jason Thompson and Sean May didn’t post impressive stat lines but their defense was invaluable. Chris Bosh had an off night (6-20 shooting), but he was also pestered by Thompson and May, specifically in the second half. The duo denied Bosh the ball, showed active hands and forced Bosh into some tougher shots. They also kept the Raptors star off the foul line, as he shot just three free throws. May and Thompson totaled 5 steals and really triggered the Kings comeback victory.

3 – Beno Udrih is again Mr. Reliable. After a brief hiatus, Udrih is back as the Kings steady hand during tough times. He finished with 24 points on terrific 10-14 shooting from the field, and he added 8 assists to only 2 turnovers. Udrih shows no panic in any situation. He is a calming influence for the whole team, especially his backcourt mate Evans. The two guards have formed a great relationship, and the chemistry continues to grow.

Quick hits – It was great to see Donte Greene have a good game. Greene seems to garner more scrutiny from Paul Westphal than most players, but his 15 points (eight in the third quarter) were a huge lift … Carl Landry had just two points in the first half but came alive for 13 in the second half – consistent performer … Francisco Garcia hit all five of his shots in 23 minutes. His final make gave Evans assists number 10 with 1:34 left in the game.
