It was announced today that Kings guard Tyreke Evans was named the Western Conference Rookie of the Month for November. While Kings fans have undoubtedly noticed Evans’ huge contributions to the team, this award gives him league-wide recognition. Bucks guard Brandon Jennings, who won in the Eastern Conference, has stolen a lot of the rookie spotlight, thanks in large part to his 55-point performance against Golden State.
But most Kings fans probably wouldn’t trade Evans for Jennings. It’s interesting to compare Tyreke’s first month in the league to some other star players’ debut Novembers.
Tyreke Evans: 20.3 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 5.1 APG
Dwyane Wade: 14.7 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 4.1 APG
LeBron James: 16.8 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 6.1 APG
Kobe Bryant: 5.4 PPG, 1.4 RPG, 0.5 APG
Allen Iverson: 21.8 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 6.4 APG
Evans’ statistics from November stack up very favorably with some of the biggest stars of the last decade. Wade, a player Evans is often compared to, lost out on the Rookie of the Year that season to James. But Wade led the Heat to the playoffs. Bryant, who skipped college, didn’t become a full-time starter until his third season and saw only 15 minutes per game as a rookie. Iverson was in the same deep draft class as Bryant and won the Rookie of the Year.
Evans has set the bar high for himself. And if he wants to follow in the footsteps of the stars mentioned above, he’ll have to improve upon his numbers. Everyone except Bryant raised their scoring average in December.
