Mushers are the key component of the Iditarod race.  There are have been major improvements in dog breeding and genetics during the past 40 years.  Significant changes have been made in sled design, dog harnesses, sled runners, dog food, packaged food for the mushers, dog foot gear and various other aspects of racing.  In the Iditarod the human is the limiting factor.  The dogs are well trained, in good physical condition and are capable of continuing to reduce the time required to run the race.  However, the mushers may be maxed out in regard to how fast they can race and maintain that pace to complete the Iditarod.  http://www.iditarod.com/race   Some fine articles are posted which delve into the many improvements made in dog sled racing equipment and racing strategy during recent years.

Undoubtedly there are human interest stories surrounding each musher and their families.  What is the motivation and fantastic drive that almost compels people to drive sled dogs?  Why would a big man from Scotland, a cancer survivor, Jamaican native, beautiful former model, Alaskan native, Alaskan Caucasian, Chicago resident, a doctor and diverse other mushers have a common goal of breeding, training and driving dogs in the Iditarod?  Whatever the motivation we must admire the tenacity, stamina and ability demonstrated by mushers and teams.

From a spectator viewpoint it was interesting to see the many differences in the dog sled teams.  Teams and mushers must work together and have an affinity for teamwork and an ability to compete in spite of the odds against them.  Seventy two teams were scheduled to start the race yesterday.  Only one team can win and many will not finish the race.  Five or more former winners, several multiple winners and numerous rookies were among the competitors in the 2010 race.  Each will do their best on the trail and will learn some things that will help them continue to grow and succeed.

Dog sled racing is not a millionaire's sport like horse racing, Indy and Nascar racing.  There are no rookies, however athletic they may be, who are selected in a draft and given multi-million dollar contracts to compete.  Rather, there are dog teams that travel from race to race in beatup pickups and dog carrier trailers and barely make ends meet.  They all love the sport and the thrill of the race.

Difference in team colors, harnesses, foot gear, number of handlers, number of fans, color and size of the dogs, sled styles and chances of winning or placing were observed and commented on by the thousands of fans lining the course.  The Iditarod start is a sports spectacle and certainly worthy of a trip to this winter wonderland to see.  I met fans from southern California and also from northern Alaska.  A great day for a great race.
