The 4th of July is upon us. For most that means cook outs and fireworks. For runners in San Diego, it means it is time to race! No matter what your afternoon and evening plans may be, the morning of the 4th is a great opportunity to test your fitness at a local race. Two of the most popular 4th of July races in San Diego are happily celebrating their thirties this year.

The thirty-third annual July 4th Scripps Ranch 10K and Fun Run is hosted by the Scripps Ranch Old Pros at Lake Miramar. The 6.2 mile race is USATF sanctioned and its dramatically fast downhill finish draws in some of the best runners and triathletes from the county. The two mile, family-friendly Fun Run shares the same finish line as the 10K. The events begin at 7:00 A.M. but be sure to stick around for the post race festivities including the Scripps Ranch parade at 10:00 A.M. Registration fees are $30 for the 10K and $20 for the Fun Run.

The thirty-seventh annual Coronado Independence Day 15K and 5K, organized by Kathy Loper Events, is known as one of the fastest races in San Diego. The almost three thousand racers will start at 7:00 A.M. in Tidelands Park next to the Coronado Bridge and finish on the Silver Strand by the Naval Amphibious Base. There are over twenty nationally ranked 15K times clocked on this USATF sanctioned course. Each finisher will receive a commemorative t-shirt and the top finishers in each age group will receive awards. Both races carry a $40 day of race registration fee.

Why not kick off your San Diego 4th of July celebration with a little competition? After all, what better way to celebrate your freedom and your fitness than with a race?
