The Scripps Ranch Old Pros, the craziest bunch of guys you'd ever want to know, have done it again! While most San Diegans were sleeping in or preparing their grills for the 4th of July festivities, the Old Pros were priming the streets of Scripps Ranch for the thirty-third annual 4th of July 10K race and fun run.

The 6.2 mile race started on Red Cedar Drive with a showing of the color guard by local Marines and the singing of the national anthem. After completing one full loop of the pedestrian path that circles Miramar Lake, racers headed toward a speedy downhill finish to Hoyt Park. Upon finishing, runners received their choice of a t-shirt or tank-top as well as water, Gatorade, fruit, snacks, and access to a beer garden for those over twenty-one. Race results were quickly posted so participants could gauge their performance against others in their divisions.

The men's race was quickly won by thirty-six year old Nazario Romero in a time of 30:50, a 4:59 per mile pace. The battle for second and third was determined by a mere one second between Hector Hernandez, thirty-eight, and Alex Smith, sixteen, with times of 31:22 and 31:23, respectively.

The women's race was dominated by the 25-29 year old division with Loretta Kilmer, twenty-seven, claiming victory in 33:47. Close behind her was Lesly Patterson, twenty-nine, in 34:27, and rounding out the top three was KC Meehan, also twenty-nine, with a time of 35:41.

Runners young and old were out in record numbers to celebrate their freedom and fitness. Over two thousand runners took part in the 10K and more than six hundred participated in the two mile fun run. Registration was up by more than two hundred compared to 2009. Local running clubs were represented with runners from the San Diego Track Club, Triathlon Club of San Diego, Bonita Road Runners, Team in Training, Run-2-3, West Coast Road Runners, and plenty of local high-school and middle-school teams.

The race was sponsored by Wells Fargo, Sharp Rees Stealy, Cricket mobile, Geico, and Black Mountain Cycles, among others.
