"After our 5K race at Mission Bay Park in January, everyone kept asking when and where is the next one?", says Tanya Maslach, founder of GOTRIbal. The well received event of more than one-hundred women was the first of many more to come.
GOTRIbal is a worldwide network of women who participate in endurance sports including running and triathlon. The goal of the San Diego based organization is to empower women through these sports and to help them connect with others who share the same interests. As their website states, "It's not about a training program. It's not about a race. It's GOTRIbal. And it's a way of life."
GOTRIbal members are organized by 'tribes'. There are currently thirty-six tribes in fifteen countries and forty-five US states. The San Diego tribe is the largest with eighty-six members. "We are here to lead by example and to be supportive whether you are new to the sport or an experienced Ironman," Maslach adds. Members include all types of female athletes from beginners to the three-time Ironman world champion, Chrissie Wellington.
On Saturday July 17th, 2010, the San Diego tribe will be hosting their second event, "GOTRIbal In The Park". From 8 A.M. until noon at the Ocean Air Recreation Center, you can participate in an hour yoga session, a "Get Your Booty Strong" boot camp, a 2K run, and a mother-daughter duathlon. An impressive raffle and delicious goodies will also be provided. The event is open to all women regardless of age, experience, or skill. Even though membership with GOTRIbal is free, you do not need to be a member to attend. Registration for this women-only event is available on the GOTRIbal website and is $35 per individual or $45 for a team of two. Additionally, on Friday evening July 16th, the group will be meeting at University City Physical Therapy from 5:30 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. to discuss upper body injuries and injury prevention with UCPT owners Renee and Gino Cinco.
