The best and brightest boys and girls raced one of the most memorable Foot Locker Cross Country Championship races today. The girl’s contest come down to the wire, literally, as Michigan’s Megan Goethals gave 110% to squeak past Texan Chelsey Sveinsson right at the finish line. Both girls shared the time of 17:07 but it was Goethals who got the trophy. (Per many coaches, “Always run through the finish . . . never, ever let up!”)
Illinois sophomore phenom Lukas Verzbicas crushed the boy's field with his historic 15:08 win, becoming the youngest champion. I’m curious, does anyone else see a similarity between this teenager--a top-notch, nationally ranked triathlete--and another teen phenom who began his sports career as a triathlete? I’m thinking of Lance Armstrong. Hey, I’m just throwing it out there – discuss among yourselves in the Comment section. If you have some time, I highly recommend watching the video link to the race, it starts out with a preview, but it's also worth watching the introductions of each runner in addition to the races.

Wow, what a girls race finish! Yes, the video is a must-watch. I wonder if Sveinsson surged too early...especially since she has speed. You got to give Goethalis credit for going for it though. That must have hurt.
