The 5th Annual “run for her”® 5K Run and Friendship Walk took place this past weekend on Sunday, November 15th. 4,500 runners, walkers, and volunteers filled the streets surrounding The Grove in Los Angeles. This event was created to raise awareness about ovarian cancer and generate support for the Cedars-Sinai Women’s Cancer Research Institute (WRCI) at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute.

First place honors in the race went to Fedly Bonneau, 27, from Los Angeles in 15:27 in the men’s division and Daniela Alonso, 28, also of Los Angeles, was the first woman across the line in 16:43.

Participants included Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky and four-time Daytime Emmy nominee Jackie Zeman from General Hospital.

Since the inaugural race five years ago the event has become one of the largest of its kind in the United States. This year the Los Angeles based run/walk launched “Sleepwalkers Across America®” a signature team to allow anyone, anywhere to participate in the event. Sleepwalkers are fully registered walkers or runners who join in the event wherever they live. In addition to the 4,500 participants in Los Angeles, walks took place in other cities including New York, Miami, Chicago and Austin, Texas. This is the largest number of participants in the event’s five-year history.

Nearly $750,000 was raised by “run for her”® participants and donors for Ovarian Cancer Research.

Donations are still being accepted at www.runforher.com.

Malibu International Marathon

500 runners took part in the inaugural Malibu International Marathon on Sunday, November 15th.

Organized by Malibu-based Forever Runners LLC, the event contributed funds to several charities in the area, including the Malibu Boys & Girls Club, among others.

The City of Malibu has approved the event for five years so look for this race on the calendar next fall.
